The Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar for Chickens

Grocery stores carry ACV, but make sure it’s organic with the “mother” for the best health benefits

Apple Cider Vinegar is used by people as a way to lose weight, assist in diabetic problems, killing bacteria, and cleaning, but it’s also my go-to for my chickens. It’s one of the best things to add to their water, and they seem to actually prefer the taste of ACV over any other supplement. Not only that, but ACV is relatively cheap and easy to find, making it a perfect choice for a supplement.

ACV is a good regulator of pH levels in the body. If a chicken’s body is to acidic, they’re more vulnerable to disease, and as everyone knows, if one chicken gets sick, it’s very easy to spread to the rest of the flock. Prevention is definitely easier than trying to figure out what’s wrong and how to treat it, that’s for sure! Along with preventing disease in your chickens, ACV helps to boost the immune system so that way the chicken can fight illness before it strikes.  It only takes about 1 mL per chicken in their water each day to keep them healthy! ACV can also be used as a preventive measure for respiratory illness as it promotes healthy mucus flow while acting as an antiseptic, killing the germs, bacteria, and viruses that cause illnesses.

Chickens are introduced to all kinds of parasites and viruses when free-ranging, which isn’t a bad thing as they can build up a natural immunity, but there’s also a chance that they can get sick, so ACV will be able to help prevent illness by supporting their immunity.

As another bonus, ACV helps prevent mites, lice, and worms. Adding a clove or two of garlic to their water every now and then will keep your flock under a strong guard against parasites. Remember, don’t use to much garlic as it can taint the taste of eggs, and in extreme cases, may even cause liver damage to your flock. By extreme cases I mean by bulbs of garlic everyday, which would be toxic to anyone.

All in all, Apple Cider Vinegar is extremely beneficial to your flock, and I suggest giving to them in their water daily, or rotating with a vitamin supplement such as Nutri-Drench. No matter what you decide to do, ACV definatley should be a go-to and part of your first-aid kit for your flock. Happy Chickening!
